"Tiny little heroes" - The history and roots of the ecovillage-movement

Although the ecovillage-movement is a relatively new phenomenon (it has only started to come into being in the 1990ies), the initiatives it aims to integrate do have a much longer history. The author of the present article has been studying ecovillages since 2008. As a cultural anthropologist, she concentrates first of all has upon the socio-cultural dimensions of the ecovillage-movement. The present paper focuses on the history and roots of the movement by situating eco-villages within both the history of the broader environmental movement and intentional communities; introduces the international and Hungarian history of the ecovillage-movement; and, last but not least, interprets Hungarian ecovillages in the context of rural migration processes. The picture drawn here does not aspire being an exhaustive one since the ecovillage-phenomenon can be presented from numerous different perspectives. Still, our study clearly demonstrates the multiple embeddedness of the movement, and it takes us closer to the understanding of the aspirations of ecovillage inhabitants and the current functioning of ecovillages.
